Buying a laptop is not an easy decision. There are many factors to consider, including the type of laptop you want (business or gaming), your budget, and the time of year. We may think a good time to buy laptops is during either Black Friday or Cyber Monday; are these really the best times to buy a laptop?

Sort of. You can also find deals on laptops around Independence Day, Veteran's Day, and Memorial Day. There are several times throughout the year when you can save money on laptops, so don't feel like you always have to wait for one of these "best times to buy".

If portability isn't a major factor in your decision, you might want to consider buying a desktop computer or gaming rig instead. If your computing needs demand raw power, you can often get more for your money by sacrificing portability in favor of a desktop computer. In this case, use the following guides to your advantage:

  • The Best Time to Buy a Gaming PC

General Laptop Sale Periods

Black Friday sales generally last several days before Thanksgiving through the following Sunday and Cyber Monday sales tend to take place on the Monday after Thanksgiving. Other times during the year when laptop deals abound include:

Mother's Day

You can get a nice laptop at a decent price around mother's day since companies run sales on netbooks and cheaper computers you might purchase for Mom.

Independence Day

The fourth of July holiday and the closest weekend to it is a good time to grab a laptop; since people are off work and shopping, retailers always run sales.

Veteran's Day

Veteran's Day is a great time for veterans to combine the veterans' discount benefits that many retailers provide with the normal sales run by these retailers. Non-veterans will still find great deals.

Memorial Day

This old standby is actually a pretty good time to buy laptops too. Whether you're looking for an everyday workhorse or something slim and sleek, Memorial Day has plenty of laptop deals to offer!

There are several other times during the year when you can find great laptop deals. These are just the most popular times of the year to shop for laptops. For example, Amazon Prime Day is another great time for deals on laptops. You can also find electronic rebates, or "Ebates", for cash back on your purchase.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Purchase

If you don't have much money to spend on a computer you might want to consider a refurbished laptop. These professional-repaired laptops are great for students or people who are on a budget and normally carry the same manufacturer's warranty as new computers do.

So now that you know the best time to buy your new laptop, let's discuss how to get the most out of your purchase with these tips:

  1. Get the most out of your purchase by using it every day
  2. Don't worry about saving money on a product that you don't need or will never use
  3. Buy quality products, not cheap ones - they will last longer and be more enjoyable to use
  4. Be careful with what you buy, make sure you're buying something that is actually needed
  5. When shopping for electronics, always read reviews first before making any purchases
  6. Make sure to get an extended warranty when purchasing expensive items like laptops or cars; this way if anything goes wrong within the time limit, the company will fix it for free!
  7. Check out different stores (online and offline) to see what the best deals are
  8. Wait for seasonal sales! Stores always offer their best prices during Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

Where to Find Deals on Laptops During Different Times of the Year

During the winter months, stores are always trying to get rid of old inventory so they will cut the prices on laptops to make room for the new arrivals.

For instance, last year during Black Friday, I was able to buy my favorite laptop for $300 less than it typically retails. This is because stores like Best Buy, Walmart, or Target typically cut their prices on electronics to get rid of their older inventory.

This also means that you can find cheaper laptops during the winter months. Have a look around before making any purchases to save the most money. During this time of year, make sure to check out Best Buy; they will usually offer their best deals on electronics during their Boxing Week sale.

Once the summer months roll around, most retailers will start offering "back to school" sales. During these sales, you can typically find laptops for $100-$200 off. This is also one of the times of the year when you're able to find higher-end laptops (e.g. the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro) for incredibly cheap prices. For instance, this past back-to-school season, Best Buy had the MacBook Air on sale for $799. This laptop sells for around $1,000 at most retailers so it was an incredible deal!

Promos and Coupons

If you're in the market for a new laptop, it's important to know when they will have their next sale. Be sure to check back with stores and online retailers periodically so that you don't miss out on any discounts and stay up-to-date with all of their promotional offers. You can also subscribe to their email list, which will keep you updated about upcoming sales events and help save some money by receiving exclusive coupons from your favorite stores.
